Sixteen on Sunday

Sixteen things I'm thankful for today

  1. We made it all the way to Maine in our newly repaired van. (More precisely, we made it to a couple of hundred yards shy of mile 12 on the Maine Turnpike.)
  2. Grant renewed our AAA Plus membership last week just as it was about to expire.
  3. We had our cell phones with us.
  4. My folks were home when we called to ask if they knew of a good repair shop near them.
  5. They knew of one.
  6. It wasn't snowing. It wasn't even raining.
  7. There was a blueberry patch just the right size for a quick snack conveniently located right next to the turnpike.
  8. We kept ourselves occupied with books, Sudoku and knitting while waiting to be rescued.
  9. The tow-truck driver cheerfully took us all the way to Yarmouth (about 40 miles).
  10. My parents picked us up at the shop and drove us to the Portland airport so we could rent a car.
  11. We found a rental that could hold almost all of our stuff. (We had to leave the hammock behind.)
  12. It has satellite radio, so the Red Sox came in loud and clear even in the middle of nowhere.
  13. We got to Rangeley at about nine last night.
  14. The van is apparently quite sick, but we are all in fine health.
  15. Rangeley hasn't changed much.
  16. Miss B and I went swimming this morning.

  • What a start to a vacation. Hope you enjoy it, despite van woes.

  • My parents had that happen back in their Chevy Suburban days, transmission, I think.

I remember them saying at least the shop where they had it fixed was cheaper than the ones near home.

  • 16 things?! I don't know if I'm ever thankful for 16 things. You sound as if your head is in the right place for vactaion though. Have a great time!

  • Between you and Ruth, I am beginning to think that vacations are dangerous creatures indeed.

Glad you are okay, and tell Miss B to quit looking so grown up!

  • erk. I hope the van can be fixed/patched enough to get you home.

That is a truly stunning picture of Miss B.

  • Lucky you! Even with the car problems you're in a great spot!

  • So glad you and Miss B got a chance to swim already. And who is that lovely young woman with the floatie?

It sounds as if good karma has averted an unfortunate curse on you. May the rest of the trip remain unblemished! (And keep counting the good things. It just fills the happiness bins!)

  • glad you made it ok! i'm always grateful for the little things that add up to avoiding a total disaster, where if just one or two of them had been different, the whole end result would have been opposite.

  • I hope we get to compare your car-breakdown story to Ruth's vacation-trauma story soon. I have a feeling she's going to win, since you guys had cell phones and puzzles handy and your tow truck driver was the affable sort. ;-)

(But you do get major points for breaking down almost within sight of your destination.)
